What do you call a Brown Guy with a Beard??
If you have read my blog post that I wrote last year on January 11th 2011, then you would know the story and the answer. Not much has changed since then except in the person who was name calling. If you missed it then the link is given at the end.
So this teacher asked me smilingly “Are you from Saudi Arabia?” in a class full with students.
I asked him smilingly “Are you serious, do I look like an Arab? You should know that.”
He responded “I don’t know- Saudia Arabia or Afghanistan.”
Me: “Are you kidding me, just because of the beard.”
Ishmael Khaldi, adviser to Avigdor Lieberman (Israel’s Minister of Foreign Affairs), was invited to speak at the University of Michigan- Ann Arbor Campus.
Here is what happened!

Irshad Manji with Islamophobe Salman Rushdie
Irshad Manji’s WTF Tweet of the Day
(Update I below)
Muammar Gaddafi’s regime collapsed yesterday, as the capital Tripoli was liberated by freedom-fighters. As people all over the world rejoiced–including Libyans and Muslims across the globe–this is what faux-progressive Muslim Irshad Manji had to say; she tweeted:
Regardless of what happens in #Libya, may the victims of Pan Am 103 be at rest.” #Qaddafi #Tripoli
Ahmed Rehab tweeted in response:
WTF tweet of the day: @IrshadManji: “Regardless of what happens in #Libya, may the victims of Pan Am 103 be at rest.” #Qaddafi #Tripoli
Rehab described Manji’s tweet in the best possible manner: a WTF tweet. WTF, indeed.
(“Pan Am 103″ is referencing a terrorist attack in the 1980′s, in which about 270 people were killed. Libyans were implicated in this attack. As one reader pointed out, it was actually Gaddafi himself, but Irshad Manji won’t let that fact bother her too much–it was those damn Libyans!)
In any case, a twitter war ensued thereafter, with one person responding to Manji saying:
and how about the 20 thousand Libyans who died in battle fighting Qadafi?
To which Manji replied:
Another good post giving the so-called Arab Spring a perspective by ‘asqfish.’
I am sitting in the Arabic Class. In addition to the regular students there are many new students who have come to attend a free introductory class to taste the flavor of Arabic and are trying to figure out if it will benefit them.
There are Muslims who are dissatisfied with the twenty-seven translations of the same ayah of the Quran, each one different from the other. They wonder how to learn “Modern Standard Arabic” which is the Arabic of the Quran, and remove the middle man (the translator) between them and their Lord, Allah Subhanawataala.
There are non-Muslims college students who see their future as policy makers of the United States and have wisely come seeking the learning of the language spoken in the richest part of the world. Understanding its complex culture, which is based on the richness of the language and the practice of people based on the commands of the Quran, which is expressed in Modern Standard Arabic. Since my High School years (in America), I have come across many people especially Muslims, who had a complete lack of understanding of Islam, although they never would admit to this. People of other faith, I understand, but Muslims not knowing A-B-C of Islam this is what I am talking about.
You might be thinking how arrogant I am to say such a thing. You might think who do I think I am that I can judge people and their understanding. Continue reading
