What is the Purpose of Learning Hadith?

By Umer Sultan | (6/17/2015)

The Prophetic Traditions, known as Hadith (pl. Ahadith), are very near and dear to the hearts of the Muslims. The Muslims are often found quoting the Traditions of Prophet Muhammad, the Last Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him).

Here we try to answer why Hadith is so important to Muslims and what is the purpose of learning these Prophetic Traditions?

“Give us the good of this world and the next…”

:: Give us the good of this world and the next ::

Narrated by Anas (radiAllahu anhu):

The Messenger of Allah, Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to say:

“اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ “

“O God, give us all the good of this world, and the good of the life hereafter, and save us from the punishment of the fire.”

(Qur’an 2:201)

[Sahih al-Bukhari, Book 65 “Tafseer of the Prophet”, Hadith 4563]

The difference between Qur’an, Hadith and Hadith Qudsi | The Qur’an Series

“The most important distinction between the Qur’an and all other words or writings therefore is that the Qur’an is the speech from Allah, revealed in its precise meaning and wording through the Angel Gabriel, transmitted by many…” Continue reading

Preface to What is the Sunnah and Hadith?

By Umer Sultan| Part 1: Preface to What is the Sunnah and Hadith?

One of the most common topic of discussion among Muslims now a days is about the Sunnah.  Most of us Muslims have heard this word ‘Sunnah‘ and in many discussions we might have heard brothers and sisters questioning, discussing and arguing the following:

If Hadith is the saying of Prophet Muhammad, is Sunnah the actions of the Prophet? What is the significance of either one?

What is Sunnah? What is the authority of Sunnah?

I don’t have to follow Sunnah, I can leave it. It is not like it is Fard (obligatory).

Is Sunnah below the Qur’an? Is Sunnah inferior than the Qur’an?

I don’t understand the difference between Sunnah and Hadith!

Is beard a Sunnah or Wajib (commanded)? I was told it is Sunnah, but others say it is Wajib?  What is the difference? Can both be true at the same time or not? I am confused.

The list, however, continues and I am not here to compile the list. Each of these issues will be addressed piece meal inshallah (God Willing) in the Continue reading

What Muhajir and Pathan Can Learn From the Qur’an

By Umer Sultan| “Lets move from the Jahiliyyah to the nobility of Islam!”

The sanctity of Ramadan is meaningless for them. The open doors of Heavens are meaningless for them. Seeking forgiveness for the past shortfalls and asking Allah for guidance is meaningless for them. What is meaningful for them, however, is to shed blood of their Muslim brothers because Allah had created them into different languages and ethnicity.

I am not talking about Syria in which the government forces are shooting down the Muslims praying in the Mosques. I am talking about the situation in Karachi in which over 300+ people have died and counting, where the city has been hijacked by mainly two secularist-ethnic nationalist parties-ANP- Awami National Party (Pathan) and MQM- formerly Muhajir Qaumi Movement (Muhajir). Target killings are the norm in the city, and the sins of the dead & their families is that they belong to one of the two ethnic groups- Pathan or Muhajir, or they happened to be the bystanders, where as, the PPP-Pakistan Peoples Party, is having a low-profile in the conflict.

Pathan are Pashto speaking people from the North Western region of Pakistan neighboring Afghanistan. Muhajir are Urdu speaking people who migrated from India to Pakistan. This insanity is also part of  the Global War on Terror. The MQM that claims to uphold the rights of Muhajir has Continue reading

One Stop Guide for an Introductory Understanding of Islam

Since my High School years (in America), I have come across many people especially Muslims, who had a complete lack of understanding of Islam, although they never would admit to this. People of other faith, I understand, but Muslims not knowing A-B-C of Islam this is what I am talking about.

You might be thinking how arrogant I am to say such a thing. You might think who do I think I am that I can judge people and their understanding. Continue reading

Heart rendering story of a mother and her son

I found this heart rendering story of a mother and her son online. For those who would take heed (myself being the first one) I post it on my blog. –Umer Sultan

My mum only had one eye, I hated her, she was such an embarrassment! She cooked for teachers and students to support the family. There was one day during primary school where she came to say hello to me. I was so embarrassed, how could she do this to me!

I ignored her, threw a hateful look and ran out.

The next day one of my class mates said “Eeww, your mum only has one eye!”
I wanted to bury myself, I also wanted my mum to disappear. So i confronted her and said, “If you’re only going to make me a laughing stock, why don’t you just die!”

My mum did not respond. I didn’t even stop to think for a second about what I had said, because I was full of anger!

I was oblivious to her feelings, I wanted out of that house. So I studied really hard and got a chance to go to Singapore. Then i got married. I bought a house of my own. I had kids of my own and I was happy with my life. Then one day my mother came to visit me. She hadn’t seen me in years and she didn’t even meet her grandchildren!

When she stood by the door my children laughed at her.

I screamed at her, “How dare you come to my house and scare my children! Get out of here now!” And to this my Continue reading
