[After salutations, peace and blessings upon Prophet Muḥammad]
Peace be upon you all,
Today we have gathered here at the Hira Foundation for the ḥifẓ program ceremony. What is the background of the Hira Foundation? The president of the university (Dār al-ʿUlūm Karachi) and Grand Mufti of Pakistan, my respected brother Mufti Rafīʿ ʿUthmāni has stated on numerous occasions, and I have also been able to mention what my father (Mufti Shafīʿ ʿUthmāni) had once stated at a gathering: after the creation of Pakistan, we need a new education system.
Before the creation of Pakistan, there were three major education systems that were in effect (in South Asia): the system of Dār al-ʿUlūm Deoband, the system of Aligarh Muslim University, and the system of Dār al-ʿUlūm Nadwat al-ʿUlamā. Continue reading

Imam Malik bin Anas (b. 93 AH, d. 179 AH) was one of the greatest Islamic scholars of all times. Among his 1300 disciples were people from all walks of life; rulers, judges, historians, Sufis, poets, and scholars of Qur’an, Hadith, and Fiqh (Jurisprudence). The Khalifah attended his class as an ordinary student along with others.
In the best traditions of this Ummah Imam Malik considered his knowledge as a trust. When he knew something to be right or wrong, no intimidation could stop him from declaring so. It was his fatwa that divorce given under compulsion is invalid, that earned him the wrath of the ruler (as it implied that pledge of allegiance given under compulsion was also invalid). He was punished with lashes and at every strike he said,
“I am Malik bin Anas and I declare that divorce given under compulsion is invalid.”
We have heard all this before “Why our Ulema do not come together and use Ijtihad?,” however, recently a 3 day international seminar took place in the capital city Islamabad, Pakistan, organized by The Islamic Research Institute of the International Islamic University-Islamabad (IIUI) on “Islamic Legal Thought and Institutions in South Asia.“
Scholars mainly attended from India and Pakistan with one scholar from United States. Scholars were from different school of thoughts and presented their research work and recommendations on contemporary Fiqh and the evolution of fiqh in South Asia.
