Review: “Palestine: Peace not Apartheid by Jimmy Carter”

Published in 2006, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter wrote about the history of the attempts of peace negotiations between the State of Israel and its Arab neighbors, including the issue of a Palestinian State. Jimmy Carter has been actively involved in the peace process through out his life.

Mr. Carter included a brief historical chronology of the Palestine/Israel region, starting from 1900 B.C. when “Abraham journeys from Ur to Canaan” to the August of 2006 when “the United Nations approves its  Resolution 1701, establishing a fragile cease-fire.

“US Media and Israel Military, All in the Family” by Alison Weir of If Americans Knew

By Alison Weir, Sabbah Report

[Alison Weir is executive director of If Americans Knew, which provides information and media analysis on Israel-Palestine]

I don't own the Picture

Recent exposés revealing that Ethan Bronner, the New York Times Israel-Palestine bureau chief, has a son in the Israeli military have caused a storm of controversy that continues to swirl and generate further revelations.

Many people find such a sign of family partisanship in an editor covering a foreign conflict troubling especially given the Times’ record of Israel-centric journalism.

Times management at first refused to confirm Bronner’s situation, then refused to comment on it. Finally, public outcry forced Times Public Editor Clark Hoyt to confront the problem in a February 7th column.

After bending over backwards to praise the institution that employs him, Hoyt ultimately opined that Bronner should be re-assigned to a different sphere of reporting to avoid the “appearance” of bias. Times Editor Bill Keller declined to do so, however, instead writing a column calling Bronner’s connections to Israel valuable because they “supply a measure of sophistication about Israel and its adversaries that someone with no connections would lack.”

Iran and Syria strengthening their ties, counter to US-Israeli expectations!

Below is an article published at Muslim Observor. This signing of new accord between the state of Syria and Iran shows that both countries will resist the United States pressure on their sovereignty. It also throws the very much popular rhetoric by these so called experts in the US media that the division between Shia and Sunnis, 2 major muslim groups, are so deep that they will keep fighting. It is interesting to note that Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad (“shia”) met with the exiled leader of Hamas “sunni”, the popular Palestinian Islamic resistence movement.

I don’t think trying to isolate Iran and having sanctions on it would change anything. Iran is a signitory of the Nuclear Prolifiration Treaty, and thus it has a right to have a nuclear power for energy. The UN should deal with Iran, not the US.

DAMASCUS: The presidents of Syria and Iran signed a visa-scrapping accord on Thursday, signaling even closer ties and brushing aside United States efforts to drive a wedge between the two allies.

“I am surprised by their call to keep a distance between the countries … when they raise the issue of stability and peace in the Middle East, and all the other beautiful principles,” Syrian President Bashar Assad told a news conference in Damascus with his Iranian counterpart, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

“We need to further reinforce relations if the true objective is stability. We do not want others to give us lessons on our region, our history,” the Syrian president said.

A Letter From Archbishop Atallah to the Muslim World: A Call for Abrahamic Brotherhood

Archbishop Atallah Hanna’s message to the Muslim world:

To the dear Muslim brothers and friends
From your Christian brother, Bishop Atallah Hanna,
From Jerusalem, the heart of the Christian and Muslim worlds.
Greeting and blessing and God have mercy on us all.

We all heard what happened when some Muslims attacked some Christians in Egypt on Christmas day, after people finished their prayers filled with holiday joy and grace. They are all from Egypt, a land that is a mother to both Muslims and Christians. This attack on Christmas day, resulted in the death of 6 Christians and 1 Muslim, turning a joyous and blessed day to a sad day filled with grief and death between Muslim and Christian brothers.

On this occasion, I address my Muslim friends and brothers to think about some matters that will help prepare a better future for all the children of a united Arab family, in order to prevent sectarian incidents that occur from time to time in the Arab world, with its Muslim majority, and a Christian minority which among themselves, keep reminding each other of a united Arab nation, and the different religious and civilized stages that the nation has been undergoing.

My message is that we must seek together a serious effort to create a new generation of Muslims and Christians who know they are the sons of one homeland, who hold the same message in building a nation filled with peace and prosperity and love.

I know of some Islamic currents that oppose the various growing types of modern colonialism that target us all, Christians and Muslims. Some Muslims have become confused between their Christian brothers in the homeland and western colonialists, because some, not all, of these invaders or colonialists, are Christians. In fact colonialist policies now are free from the spirit of Christianity, and are actually policies that both Christians and Muslims are its victims of.

With respect to all people in the world, east and west, there must be a distinction between an abusive colonialist and a true believer in his faith and God, who celebrated his religious holidays with joy and happiness.

We should consciously support any efforts to resist every type of modern colonialism, united and not through strife (Fitnah). Some of this “Fitnah” might have come as a natural way throughout history and resided in some families and tribes. Yet, some are unnatural and become deliberate movements that operate either out of ignorance and lack of cultural openness, or through precise awareness of trying to further segregate the people causing further destruction in the Arab countries.

Yes we have heard many opinions in the media condemning what had happened, as well as giving advise and guidance. But what we truly need is more media that explicitly analyzes sectarian incidents like this, one that calls for the need of a new Muslim-Christian education that is based on respecting one another.
An education that frankly says that religion does not tolerate any sectarian attacks and forbids viewing a person of a different faith as an enemy or somebody who is less.

The relationship between Islam and Christianity in the Arab Middle East has matured over the centuries due to a long shared history. We should stay united over this heritage that remains till this day a source of renewed life in our daily lives and not let it be the source of death that destroys our history, our humanity, and our nation.

I ask God to help us with this common endeavor to make our countries a place of faith and sincere prayer to the Almighty, where all will be equal and all living in blessing.

Christians are a big part of the Arab nation and heritage and are not remnants of any kind of colonialism. Our churches are the property of the entire nation and an assault on it is an assault on all of the people, and an assault on the Islamic holy places is an attack on us all also. Beware of those who stir up seditions, and let us face this cause of great suffering with more unity and rejection of extremism and sectarianism.

Your Brother,
Bishop Atallah Hanna
Archbishop of The Greek Orthodox Church
Jerusalem 12/1/2010

Jesus son of Mary- Isa ibn Maryam: Bringing Christians and Muslims Together

By Umer Sultan

Isa ibn Maryam (Jesus son of Mary), peace and blessings be upon him, was born a miraculous birth without a father to a woman named Maryam (Mary), who was a servant of God and a very pious and chaste woman.

Today on December 25, many Christians will be celebrating what it is suppose to be the birth of Jesus Christ in prayers and remembrance. Interesting note on this is that Christians have difference of opinion on the exact date of the birth of Jesus Christ, just like Muslims do regarding the date of the birth of Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon both of them. What is important for both of the People of the Books is to bring that divine message of these Messengers of God into their lives rather than celebrating their birthdays as cultural or ritual thing. Open Letter to the Pakistan Association of America in Michigan

From: Umer Sultan.

To: Pakistan Association of America-MI Board of Directors and the Executive Board.

Assalam-o-Alaikum

In this last month of August and at the height of the Pakistan’s 62nd Independence Day, I came across PAA-MI official booklet of congratulations to the Pakistani Community. That experience was of joy at first glance and the feeling of betrayal at another. I am here writing this to you all with deep sincerity, anger, and sadness.
Pakistan came into being after many sacrifices and hardships that no one can deny and the mass migration of the Muslims from Hindustan to Pakistan was unprecedented at least in the history of Muslims and of South Asia.
Many of those who witnessed that fateful day, the creation of an independent state for the Muslims for freedom to practice their religion, are still alive.
In the wake of the happiness of the Independence Day, we Pakistanis should not loose all our intellectual sense and completely disregard the history of Pakistan. Looking at the pictures of Pakistan in the official booklet, I saw two outlined maps of Pakistan that were missing the Jugular Vein of Pakistan.

So for a reminder to the Executive Board and the Board of Directors about our Jugular Vein, I would like to quote our Quaid-e-Azam (Great Leader) Muhammad Ali Jinnah.

The Quaid-e-Azam’s interest in Kashmir is evident from the fact that he explained the significance of the name of Pakistan to Mountbatten on 17 May 1947 as follows:

The derivation of the word Pakistan – P for Punjab; A for Afghan (i.e. Pathans NWFP); K for Kashmir; I for nothing because that letter was not in the word in Urdu; S for Sindh and Tan for the last syllable for Baluchistan“.

This explanation of the Quaid-e-Azam is contained in the official publication in the United Kingdom between 1980 and 1993 of the four final volumes of a selection of British documents relating to the Transfer of Power in India. [Azad Jammu and Kashmir]

Sir/Madam this is carelessness on the part of your organization, that is suppose to represent Pakistan and the American Pakistani community, your organization approved the official booklet with an incomplete Pakistan.
Sir/Madam Pakistan Association of America- Michigan is the only Pakistani American Association that enagages the American diplomats and Pakistani embassies for Pakistani American community in Michigan. This act represents unprofessionalism, and is an event of great grief.
Kashmir has been and will be the Jugular Vein of Pakistan. If we (the Pakistanis) are not going to make stand for the Muslims and Sikhs oppressed in the Indian held state of Jammu and Kashmir, who will?
Looking back at the history and present, we see the world recognizes Palestine and Israel as a conflict zone and Jerusalem as a disputed territory. International Media pays attention to that conflict and it is on the headlines not only in US but also through out the Muslim World. Why this is not the case with Kashmir, we must wonder?
Kashmir issue started in 1947, right after the creation of Pakistan and the independence of Hindustan (into India) from British Raj, while Israel was created in 1948. We had the opportunity of almost a year to address our stand point to the world.
The official standpoint of Islamic Republic of Pakistan, as you must know is that the Kashmir issue should be resolved by UN Resolution, which calls for impartial elections for annexation. Then why must we be ashamed of our lost territory to India when we stand by the UN Resolution, while India trash the resolution completely, and moreover, declares Kashmir as her “Atoot Ang” when in reality it is not.

You must also know that few months back, Indian held Kashmir was facing curfew for weeks and during this time, Indian security forces opened fire at unarmed protest of Kashmiris.
Sir/ Madam I request you all, who have the supposedly authority of representation of Pakistani Americans, that if you cannot educate the Americans about the issue of Kashmir, please do not show a divided Pakistan in your official publications. I am posting an Official Pakistani Map from the Ministry of Foriegn Affairs. Please refer to more Pakistani maps at Hamara Pakistan Fan Page.
I will say to you what Quaid-e-Azam said to Mountbatten on Nov 1, 1947:

“The accession [of Kashmir to India] was not a bona fide one since it rested on fraud and violence and would never be accepted by Pakistan…Accession was the end of a long intrigue.”

In conclusion, make sure this carelessness doesn’t happen in any of other official publishings. Pakistan was created based on the ideals and thought of Allama Iqbal and Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah. It is upon the present and future generation of Pakistanis around the world to reflect those good ideals, which we so often chose to ignore. PAA-MI can do its part as an organization.
Assalam-o-Alaikum.
