This review has opened my eyes.

Islam A Short History
The following is a reproduction of some observations I made while reading the first chapter of Karen Armstrong’s book “Islam: A Short History” well over a year ago.
.
All quotes and page numbers are from the e-book here
.
She writes;

” … the opposition grew, led by Abu al-Hakam (who is called Abu Jahl, “Father of Lies,” in the Quran), …” (p.12)

The Qur’an no where mentions Abu Jahl explicitly, what to say of giving him this title.

Islamic tradition would later assert that there had been 124,000 such prophets, a symbolic number suggesting infinity.” (p.8)

Clear reflection of the mythological orientalist belief that Hadith is a later “invention”

“On one occasion his most intelligent wife,Umm Salamah, helped to prevent a mutiny.” (p.16)
This is a reference to short lived reluctance of the companions to put off ihram at the eve of Hudaybiya. Giving it…

Preface to What is the Sunnah and Hadith?

By Umer Sultan| Part 1: Preface to What is the Sunnah and Hadith?

One of the most common topic of discussion among Muslims now a days is about the Sunnah.  Most of us Muslims have heard this word ‘Sunnah‘ and in many discussions we might have heard brothers and sisters questioning, discussing and arguing the following:

If Hadith is the saying of Prophet Muhammad, is Sunnah the actions of the Prophet? What is the significance of either one?

What is Sunnah? What is the authority of Sunnah?

I don’t have to follow Sunnah, I can leave it. It is not like it is Fard (obligatory).

Is Sunnah below the Qur’an? Is Sunnah inferior than the Qur’an?

I don’t understand the difference between Sunnah and Hadith!

Is beard a Sunnah or Wajib (commanded)? I was told it is Sunnah, but others say it is Wajib?  What is the difference? Can both be true at the same time or not? I am confused.

The list, however, continues and I am not here to compile the list. Each of these issues will be addressed piece meal inshallah (God Willing) in the Continue reading

Few Reads about Racism in Hollywood- Prince of Persia and the Last Airbender

I was excited when I came to know that a movie came out on Prince of Persia. I remember that game from my childhood, the setting & characters of the game which looked like eastern…like Persian. The trailer raised my eyebrows. I read few links and understood the problem. I tried explaining some of my friends about my problem with these two movies and so I have decided to post 4 of those reads at my blog.

This Prince is not Persian by Jehanzeb [Muslim Revere]

Whats Wrong with this Picture by Jehanzeb [Muslim Revere]

The Prince of Persia: The Brother is Brown by Jehanzeb [Muslim Reverie]

Gene Luen Yang: Why I Won’t be Watching The Last Airbender Movie by Gene Luen Yang

So spend some time in reading this post and decide for yourself. I was waiting for these movies, but you know I am not dying for it…it’s not worthit. I am proud for who I am by the grace of Allah and if someone thinks that is not good enough then heck I don’t care.

Islamophobia Rising! Heck Wake-up!!!

By Umer Sultan

Source: gainesville.com

Islamophobia is rising at a very alarming rate in the West and in particular the United States. Niqab bans and Minaret bans in Europe aside, and ignore recent ‘Draw Muhammad Day‘ campaign, there are news and events that do not make it to the global scale or even national level. That, however, does not mean that it can be ignored.

Allow me to provide you with these links. Dates might not be the exact day of incident as I got it from the earliest mentioning online site. Sit tight, hold your hearts for the time has come to keep your naive minds aside:-

Dan Finelli Ad: (on May 5th 2010) Mr Dan Finelli is a Florida Republican, new to the field of Politics. He is running for the 8th District seat and he ran 3 ‘bold’ actually racist and Islamophobe campaign ads. Showing brown person as a terrorist and a white man as a peaceful person! Mr. Finelli showed his ignorance by refusing to acknowledge that the suicide plane attack on an IRS facility in Texas, the shooting of Pentagon guards and the Christian militia plot to kill police officers (arrested in Michigan) were by “Whites.” DON”T STOP here! There is more below!!!
