My Mawlid Story

By Umer Sultan| Loudspeakers were set, and the entire neighborhood was echoing…

This post is not like the other Mawlid posts debating whether it is appropriate to do it or not. I am not qualified to speak on such topic, however, I do want to share a story of mine from last year. Before that a little about what is Milad/Mawlid for people who don’t know.

Mawlid (or Milad as known to South Asians) is celebrating the birth of the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, on the 12th of Rabi‘ al-awwal (ربيع الأوّل) the third month of the Islamic Lunar Calender. It is similar to the Christmas by Christians, okay may be not similar but the same concept, hence similar. People gather in Mawlid to praise the Prophet. Mawlid gatherings differ by cultures. Other Muslims consider it to be having no basis in Islam thus an Innovation (Bidah) in religion, hence condemned. That is the brief intro to what Mawlid is for those who heard this word for the first time.

My Story:

So last year I was in Karachi around this time of the year. There was  a Mawlid gathering in our neighborhood and my father was invited as well.  At first I did not want to go because there are a lot of wrong and unfounded practices that usually take place in such gatherings at least in South Asian Mawlid gatherings. However, some family members told me to attend as I will learn something new since I was very young when I moved out of Karachi. So I tagged along with my father to experience it. An Experience it was indeed…

Preface to What is the Sunnah and Hadith?

By Umer Sultan| Part 1: Preface to What is the Sunnah and Hadith?

One of the most common topic of discussion among Muslims now a days is about the Sunnah.  Most of us Muslims have heard this word ‘Sunnah‘ and in many discussions we might have heard brothers and sisters questioning, discussing and arguing the following:

If Hadith is the saying of Prophet Muhammad, is Sunnah the actions of the Prophet? What is the significance of either one?

What is Sunnah? What is the authority of Sunnah?

I don’t have to follow Sunnah, I can leave it. It is not like it is Fard (obligatory).

Is Sunnah below the Qur’an? Is Sunnah inferior than the Qur’an?

I don’t understand the difference between Sunnah and Hadith!

Is beard a Sunnah or Wajib (commanded)? I was told it is Sunnah, but others say it is Wajib?  What is the difference? Can both be true at the same time or not? I am confused.

The list, however, continues and I am not here to compile the list. Each of these issues will be addressed piece meal inshallah (God Willing) in the Continue reading

“American vs Muslim: Is there a clash of Identity” by Sheikh Yasir Qadhi

Sheikh Yasir Qadhi answers the mind troubling questions of American Muslim Identity: Can you be a Muslim and be an American at the same time? Is there a clash? Is it permissible for a Muslim to have his/her allegiance to a nation-state. What are you first? An American or a Muslim?

Do Muslims have to live in a Islamic State? Can Muslims live in a Kufr State (non-Islamic or non-Muslim State), use the kufr system to defend themselves in the Kufr State? What is the difference between the concept of Ummah and Qaumiyat (nation or community)?

Muslims residing in the Non-Muslim nation-state, can they be patriotic to their country? Is America a Christian State? What American Muslims should say if some one asks them that why are they in America?

Can American Muslims be loyal to America? Is there a clash of loyalty between Islam and America? Can American Muslims be proud Muslims and patriotic Americans at the same time? And is this permissible in Islam?

Video: Woman Judge in Shariah Court

Shariah is a path towards straight path, towards the path of God. Here Judge Khulood Al-Faqih because of the outdated judicial system, uses Shariah to give rulings. People are quite happy about it, no wonder this video didn’t show up at Fox News, or CNN  or anyother news medium. Check it out!

Having a woman as a judge is permissible according to the Fiqh (Jurisprudence) of Imam Abu Hanifa, one of the 4 great Imams of Islam.

Foreign Policy compiles sites and forums of Internet Radicals

Foreign Policy posted this interesting and alarming link at their website. There are few interesting things that I noticed.

On slide 15, it shows that these Radicals are also on Facebook with “200 fans.” Now if you compare this with other Islamic oriented pages on Facebook that are not that famous and are not affiliated with any famous organizations like Productive Muslim, Islamic Studies have many more fans than this. This is one example that it shows that it’s the small group but is highly organized.

Moreover, many of these people are working on their own by listening radical leaders on YouTube and Internet Forums, creating videos and posting on YouTube that are emotional and arouse people to do something against leadership (foreign and domestic!). The ignorance of Islam (limited or no understanding of Islam) combined with zealousy or political/financial situation of the person or his family all contributes to this radicalism.

Ulema (Muslim Religious Scholars) of Islam have always stood against Radicalism and Extremism. If you want to read a book on this subject (especially for Muslims) read “Islamic Awakening between Rejection and Continue reading
