Irshad Manji’s WTF Tweet of the Day

Irshad Manji with Islamophobe Salman Rushdie

Irshad Manji’s WTF Tweet of the Day

(Update I below)

Muammar Gaddafi’s regime collapsed yesterday, as the capital Tripoli was liberated by freedom-fighters.  As people all over the world rejoiced–including Libyans and Muslims across the globe–this is what faux-progressive Muslim Irshad Manji had to say; she tweeted:

Regardless of what happens in #Libya, may the victims of Pan Am 103 be at rest.” #Qaddafi #Tripoli

Ahmed Rehab tweeted in response:

WTF tweet of the day: @IrshadManji: “Regardless of what happens in #Libya, may the victims of Pan Am 103 be at rest.” #Qaddafi #Tripoli

Rehab described Manji’s tweet in the best possible manner: a WTF tweet.  WTF, indeed.

(“Pan Am 103″ is referencing a terrorist attack in the 1980′s, in which about 270 people were killed.  Libyans were implicated in this attack.  As one reader pointed out, it was actually Gaddafi himself, but Irshad Manji won’t let that fact bother her too much–it was those damn Libyans!)

In any case, a twitter war ensued thereafter, with one person responding to Manji saying:

and how about the 20 thousand Libyans who died in battle fighting Qadafi?

To which Manji replied:

Why the anti-Shari’ah bill that passed in Oklahoma is poppycock

by Dawud Walid

The anti-shari’ah ballot proposal passed yesterday in Oklahoma stating that shari’ah nor international law can be used in Oklahoma law.  The passage of this is not only a moot issue for the most part, but it will probably be overturned when it is legally challenged.

First, this ballot measure appears to clearly violate the 1st Amendment, which is one of the most important foundations of the U.S. Constitution.  The measure clearly singled out shari’ah thus Islam without mentioning other religions or “religious law.”  Even if it clearly included Catholic Canon Law or Judiac Law as well, this would still be improper.

Second, given that Oklahoma is governed by the U.S. Constitution and the Oklahoma Constitution, not the Torah, Bible or any other religious text, there was no practical need for the ballot initiative to begin with EXCEPT for some politicians and activists to capitalize off of Islamophobia.  Even with this ballot measure passing, religious practice will still be considered regarding martial arbitration in Oklahoma.

Ironically, Oklahoma is a state which has the death penalty in which people, like in other states, have been placed on “death row” for crimes involving circumstantial evidence.  Many innocent persons in America, primarily minorities, have been unjustly executed over the years as has been clearly documented.  The reason behind the Illinois moratorium on executions is a clear reference.  It is a main principle in the books of judging in Islamic jurisprudence (Fiqh) that “it is better for the imam [judge] to err in pardoning a person than to err in punishing” per the saying of the Prophet Continue reading

Islam has long history downtown: Why the ‘Ground Zero mosque’ belongs in lower Manhattan

My 2-Part of a series of confronting Islamophobia in America

By Edward E. Curtis

Rick Lazio, the gubernatorial candidate from Suffolk County, doesn’t like it. Sarah Palin, though not exactly a New Yorker, has resoundingly “refudiated” it. More importantly, plenty of ordinary citizens vocally oppose the establishment of a Muslim community center and mosque near the World Trade Center site.

But no matter how offensive their presence may be to some people, Muslims have always been a part of lower Manhattan‘s past. In fact, Islam in New York began near Ground Zero. From an historical perspective, there could hardly be a better place for a mosque.

One of the first Arab-American enclaves in New York City was located on Washington St. in lower Manhattan – the very area in which the World Trade Center was later built. Founded by Arabic-speaking Christians and Muslims from Ottoman Syria in the 1880s, it was called Little Syria.

The heart of Little Syria was full of outdoor cafes where non-Arab visitors sometimes gawked at men smoking hookahs and trading gossip about the Ottoman Empire. In a 1903 article, the New York Times called the Continue reading

Do Muslims have equal rights? John Esposito confronts rising Islamophobia!

*A Must Read Article by John Esposito

By John Esposito

In recent weeks, Republican politics and attempts across America to block the building of mosques have underscored the impact of Islamophobia in American society.

Republican candidates have jumped on a bandwagon, appealing to racist attitudes towards Islam and Muslims as a political wedge to gain electoral votes in the coming November elections. Bogus charges in 2008 that Barack Obama was a Muslim, as if that should discredit him, is an example of an Islamophobia which is still being used as a political strategy today. This form of political hate speech was addressed by Colin Powell in his endorsement of Obama when he asked:

“Is there something wrong with being a Muslim in this country? … I have heard senior members of my own party drop the suggestion, ”He’s a Muslim and he might be associated [with] terrorists.” This is not the way we should be doing it in America.”

Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, desperately seeking to recapture his national Republican leader role, tried this past week to create a bizarre national threat about the implementation of Islamic law, shariah, that doesn’t even exist:

“One of the things that I am going to suggest today is a federal law which says no court anywhere in the United States under any circumstance is allowed to consider sharia as a replacement for American law. Period.”

Republican Rex Duncan of Oklahoma followed suit, warning there is a “war for the survival of America,” to keep the sharia from creeping into the American court system. In California, a Tea Party Rally in protest of an Islamic Center Continue reading

Islamophobia Rising! Heck Wake-up!!!

By Umer Sultan

Source: gainesville.com

Islamophobia is rising at a very alarming rate in the West and in particular the United States. Niqab bans and Minaret bans in Europe aside, and ignore recent ‘Draw Muhammad Day‘ campaign, there are news and events that do not make it to the global scale or even national level. That, however, does not mean that it can be ignored.

Allow me to provide you with these links. Dates might not be the exact day of incident as I got it from the earliest mentioning online site. Sit tight, hold your hearts for the time has come to keep your naive minds aside:-

Dan Finelli Ad: (on May 5th 2010) Mr Dan Finelli is a Florida Republican, new to the field of Politics. He is running for the 8th District seat and he ran 3 ‘bold’ actually racist and Islamophobe campaign ads. Showing brown person as a terrorist and a white man as a peaceful person! Mr. Finelli showed his ignorance by refusing to acknowledge that the suicide plane attack on an IRS facility in Texas, the shooting of Pentagon guards and the Christian militia plot to kill police officers (arrested in Michigan) were by “Whites.” DON”T STOP here! There is more below!!!
